Horsepower (HP)

Horsepower is a unit used to measure power, meaning how quickly work is done. It was introduced by James Watt in the 18th century to compare steam engines to draft horses. Today, it’s widely used to describe the performance of engines in cars, boats, and machinery.

In simple terms, horsepower tells you how fast energy is being used or produced—not just how much.

While horsepower is useful for comparing engines, it doesn’t tell the whole story. Real-world performance also depends on factors like torque, weight, efficiency, and drivetrain design.

Horsepower from force, distance, and time

The first calculator is based on the definition of power as work over time:

  • Work = Force × Distance
  • Power = Work ÷ Time

This gives:

where:

  • (P) = power (watts)
  • (F) = force (newtons)
  • (d) = distance (meters)
  • (t) = time (seconds)

To convert watts into horsepower:

This means the calculator first computes power in watts, then converts it into horsepower automatically.

Watt: The standard unit of power

In the International System of Units (SI), power is measured in watts (W). One watt represents one joule of energy used per second:

Watts are typically used for smaller-scale systems like electronics, while kilowatts (kW) are used for larger systems such as appliances or engines.
